New York boy killed when bus hit home was in illegally constructed bedroom

Excerpt:

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. –  A building superintendent says the front bedroom where a 6-year-old boy died after a bus plowed into the house had been illegally converted from a porch. David Granados and his brother were inside about 12 feet from the street when the bus swerved to avoid a pedestrian and slammed into the Hempstead house on Tuesday. His brother suffered minor injuries. Village Superintendent Arthur Chenault tells Newsday he didn't know when the conversion was made but that no permits were issued. Property manager Matt Esposito said it likely was done decades ago. Esposito said Granados' mother, Mari Bel Molina, had moved in several months ago and paid about $400 rent a month. No criminal charges have been filed against the driver. Police haven't said whether they'll charge the pedestrian.
